Post Basic Renal Nursing is designed as a specialized, full-time academic program with a
duration of 6 months. This programme is specifically tailored for registered nurses with a
minimum of two years of clinical experience. The focus of the programme is to enhance the
knowledge and skills of nursing professionals in the areas of kidney disease, nephrology,
and renal replacement therapies; such as haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and renal
transplant.
In-depth Understanding of Kidney Disease: Students will acquire a thorough understanding
of kidney diseases, including their etiology, pathophysiology, progression and their treatment.
Specialized Knowledge in Nephrology: The programme aims to equip nurses with
specialized knowledge in nephrology, covering topics such as the anatomy and physiology
of the kidneys, diagnostic procedures, and common nephrological conditions.
Renal Replacement Therapies: Students will learn about various renal replacement
therapies, including haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation. This
includes the principles, techniques, and nursing care associated with these therapies.
Patient Care in Renal Nursing: The programme will emphasize the development of skills in
providing holistic care to individuals with kidney diseases. This includes aspects such as
assessment, monitoring, and management of patients undergoing renal replacement
therapies.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Students will be encouraged to collaborate with other
healthcare professionals involved in the care of renal patients, fostering a multidisciplinary
approach to patient management.
The program will employ a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, practical hands-
on training, case studies, and clinical rotations. This combination ensures that participants
receive both theoretical knowledge and practical skills relevant to renal nursing.
Participants will be assessed through examinations, assignments, and practical
assessments. Assessment methods are designed to evaluate both theoretical understanding
and practical application of knowledge.
Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be awarded a certification in
Post Basic Renal Nursing, acknowledging their specialized knowledge and skills in the field
which is accredited by the Malaysian Qualification Agencies and Ministry of Health of
Malaysia.
